Whats in The Article

What is Ray Tracing?

You may have heard about it and seen its effects. You’ve likely seen the memes. But what is it, and how does it work?

Ray tracing is a graphics technology that has been around for a while, but due to high costs and the sheer level of power it takes to actually run it, when using it, games could take a huge performance hit so it wasn’t implemented in video games.

That is, until now.

In recent years we have seen some ray-traced demos that are not only playable on the best PCs but actually playable on the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro!

Ray tracers first came to life as an advanced way to render light and shadows realistically, which you can see being used by Hollywood movies or TV shows like Game of Thrones.

How does it work?

Ray Tracing is a rendering process that allows an image to have a realistic feel to it by giving better lighting, texture, and overall quality.

It uses an incredibly advanced way of rendering light and shadows by simulating and tracking every ray of light produced by a source of lighting. Algorithms trace the path of light and simulate how it interacts with virtual objects generated in a computer-generated environment.

A Ray-Tracing Game is a game that utilizes this feature.

The Service Weapon is a versatile weapon that can be converted from a simple pistol to a fast fire revolver and a shotgun-style spread shooter to suit various situations while supernatural abilities can push, crush bad guys as well as allow Jesse to hover later on in-game.

The complex and dynamic environments this game offers make it the perfect game to experience high-quality 3k Ray Tracing technology. The gameplay, story, and visuals made this popular game a winner of over 80 awards.

Control Ultimate Edition has five ray tracing options: reflections, transparent reflections, indirect diffuse lighting, contact shadows, and debris.

We hope to see future games and upcoming games utilize some of the fantastic visuals displayed in this game.

Resident Evil Village is an intense survival horror game developed and published by Capcom, while also the sequel to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The game adopts a more action-orientated gameplay style than its predecessors.

Set 3 years after the events of Resident Evil 7, Ethan Winters is back as the protagonist living his life with his wife and 6-month-old daughter. All is going well until Chris Redfield and his Hound Wolf Squad raid the house, killing Ethan’s wife and kidnapping Ethan and his daughter. Ethan wakes up next to a crashed transport truck and makes his way to a nearby village terrorized by Lycans. Unable to save the villagers, Ethan is captured and learns that his daughter’s body has been split into four parts and stored in 4 separate flasks. Ethan must retrieve the flasks to restore his daughter’s body.

Ray tracing in Resident Evil Village not only enhances the game graphically it also adds a whole new feel to a horror-filled game. Light sources are more accurate; mirrors, liquids, and floors reflect their respective surroundings. Switching off ray tracing makes the scenes look less realistic and sometimes weird.

At last, we have a game that finally looks as spooky as it feels.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an action role-playing game developed and published by CD Projekt. The story takes place in Night City, an open world set in the Cyberpunk universe.

Best known for the controversy around its release, Cyberpunk 2077 was at the top of most people’s watch list for a long time, and for good reason. While not being optimized for last-gen consoles, this game is best played on the latest tech.

The player controls a mercenary named V from a first-person perspective. A host of customizations are open to you right off the bat, from the usual hair color to body modifications.

After spending hours customizing your perfect look, the player can then choose one of three life paths Nomad, Steet Kid, or Corpo. Each life path involves V starting a new life in Night City with local thug Jackie Welles and having various adventures with a Netrunner T-Bug. The player’s actions throughout the game irreversibly change how the game ends.

Cyberpunk is one of the biggest ray tracing games ever released, but it is also one of the most demanding. Ray tracing can be altered within the game’s graphics settings and changed to work with your graphics card. One point to note is the ray-tracing medium preset is the same as the preset ultra-settings but includes ray-traced shadows and medium ray-traced lighting.

Unfortunately, players looking to see their created character in full ray-traced reflections are in for disappointment as your character isn’t reflected in the Cyberpunk world. Even the mirror in your apartment requires a special view mode to see your reflection.

Ghostrunner is a cyberpunk action platformer developed by One More Level, and there are already plans for a sequel.

Set in Dharma Tower, a skyscraper-like building that houses the remainder of humanity after a global catastrophe known as The Burst. The player controls Jack, the Ghostrunner who awakens with no memory as he traverses dangerous environments to liberate a digital intelligence known as the Architect. Enemies that you encounter must be treated carefully as everyone, including yourself, can be killed in one hit. As you progress through the story, the player will unlock new abilities and upgrades to aid them.

Ghostrunner features real-time ray tracing to enhance its shadows and reflections. Unfortunately, there is only one global setting for ray tracing, which means choosing between enhanced shadows or reflections in the settings.

Godfall is an action roleplaying game developed by Counterplay Games and, on release, didn’t have ray tracing, but a recent update dubbed the Primal Update has enabled ray tracing within the game.

Set in a high fantasy setting split into the realms of Earth, Water, and Air, the player takes on the role of one of the last exalted Knight’s Order to prevent a major catastrophic event. The player has 5 weapons classes to choose from depending on their armor set, and each weapon feels and acts differently.

Best described as a looter-slasher focusing on combat of melee attacks rather than ranged, this game reminds us of Destiny without guns. The environments in the three open-world maps are vibrant and showcase incredible character, but this is even more astounding once ray tracing is enabled.

Why is a child’s game included on this list? Well, here at Signus Labs, we consider the age ratings more of a suggestion. There’s no age rating on fun!

But why is it on this list? I didn’t know Minecraft was a ray tracing game?

Well, Ray tracing is a free feature included for Players who own Minecraft for Windows 10. Players can now experience ray tracing for free if they meet the minimum technical requirements and download the latest update.

Now you can experience all the Ray-Traced Shadows, Accurate Reflections, Ray-Traced Lighting, and all the other wonders of Real-Time Ray Tracing in cubic awe!

Black Ops Cold War is a first-person shooter developed by Treyarch and Raven Software while also being the 6th installment in the Black Ops series and the 17th installment in the Call of Duty series.

Cold Wars campaign is set during the early 1980’s cold war and is centered around the pursuit of the Soviet Spy Perseus. The campaign sees the return of various characters from the Black Ops games while also featuring multiple endings.

Call of Duty is well known for its multiplayer modes, and Cold War is no different, featuring new and returning modes and an expansion to the Zombie storyline.

Ray tracing in Cold War mainly focuses on shadows, but what this does graphically to the game is exceptional. Scenes that look perfectly fine with traditional shadows look incredible with ray-traced shadows enabled. The shadows look soft and diffuse at a distance while being ultra-sharp up close.

There You have it!

With Ray Tracing looking very much like it’s the future of gaming and game development as well as the next generation of consoles now supporting Ray Tracing who knows what new wonders we can witness in-game.
